In this view, far from the hustle and bustle of coastal life, the changing light of nature and the effect of the weather on the landscape form the basis of the composition.

The large area dedicated to the sky determines the immediate sense of spaciousness of the work. Clouds of varying densities move across the clear blue sky, creating the impression of continuously changing light. Keeping the horizon low further strengthens the sky's dominance over the landscape.

The Touques River extends throughout the composition, guiding the gaze into the depths of the landscape. The calm surface of the water reflects the colors of the sky and the surrounding nature, creating a visual connection between the sky and the earth. The irregular lines of the bank naturally animate the more horizontal structure of the water.

The meadows, trees, and other vegetation along the riverbank are created by freely juxtaposing different shades of green and earth tones. The general appearance of the natural environment becomes more important than the individual definition of details. This approach gives the landscape a character observed directly in the open air.

The relationship between light, water, and sky constantly changes the atmosphere of the composition. The light and dark areas created by the clouds are reflected on the river's surface, while the colors of the vegetation on the bank also vary with the light. Thus, the visual impression created by a specific weather condition takes precedence over the physical elements of the landscape.

The free and light brushwork is particularly evident in the clouds, water surface, and vegetation. Instead of sharp boundaries, approaching touches of color convey the movement of the air and water. This pictorial approach is an important precursor to the visual understanding that Impressionist painters, who would explore the transient effects of light in the open air, would develop.

“The River Touques at Saint-Arnoult” brings together the simple nature of the riverbank with a vast sky and changing light, highlighting the atmosphere of Normandy. Reflections on the water, the green texture of the bank, and the moving clouds elevate the landscape beyond a mere depiction of a specific place, transforming it into an observation of nature focused on the continuous transformation of light and weather.

Details

Artist: Eugène Boudin (1824–1898)

Title: The River Touques at Saint-Arnoult (Saint-Arnoult’da Touques Nehri)

Date: To be verified per artwork record

Medium: Oil on canvas

Dimensions: To be verified per artwork record

Signature: To be verified per artwork record

Location: Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid

🏛️ Source &
