Combining strong color fields with simple graphic forms, the design transcends being merely an informative poster, directly transporting the characteristic visual world of the Jazz album into the public sphere.

The visual language of the poster is based on organic and dynamic forms developed from cut papers. The forms, which carry figurative associations, are stripped of detail and transformed into a powerful graphic effect through color and silhouette. Sharp curves and broad color surfaces create a continuous sense of movement throughout the composition.

The juxtaposition of vibrant and saturated colors is one of the design's core features. Colors are not used to create volume or realistic space, but rather to reinforce the visual rhythm through the contrast they establish with each other. This approach continues the relationship between color, movement, and improvisation seen throughout the Jazz album in a poster format.

Typography is also an integral part of the composition. Exhibition dates, album title, and organizational information are not just explanatory texts; they form the visual hierarchy of the poster along with the colorful forms. The word "Jazz," in particular, is placed at the center of the overall design philosophy, evoking the idea of rhythm and improvisation in music.

The visuals for the Jazz album were initially created by cutting gouache-painted papers, then reproduced using the pochoir technique. The cut-paper method eliminates the distinction between line and color, allowing the form to emerge directly from the colored surface. The visual used in the poster also benefits from the characteristic forms of this new production approach.

The poster was prepared for the exhibition held at Galeria Europa in Rio de Janeiro, which introduced the Jazz album. The printing was done in Paris at the famous Mourlot workshop. Therefore, the work is a remarkable document of modern art's significant publishing project, as well as the period when Jazz entered international circulation.

“Exposição do Novo Livro de Henri Matisse: Jazz” brings together modern graphic design, art publishing, and exhibition culture on the same surface. Intense colors, simple forms, and strong typographic arrangement transform the rhythmic visual language of the Jazz album into the direct and striking expression of the exhibition poster.

Details

Artist: Henri Matisse (1869–1954) – adapted from his design

Artwork Title: Exposição do Novo Livro de Henri Matisse: Jazz (Henri Matisse’s New Book Jazz Exhibition)

Artwork Date: 1947

Technique: Printed exhibition poster;
