Forms evoking fish, birds, marine plants, and various underwater creatures are completely stripped of realistic details and transformed into simple silhouettes. Thus, the sea becomes less of an observed landscape and more a vast visual field composed of movement, color, and memory.

The background of the composition consists of regularly arranged blue and green rectangles. The white figures moving freely on this grid-like geometric structure create a strong contrast. The encounter between the regular structure of the background and the free movement of the organic shapes is one of the fundamental elements that determine the visual rhythm of the work.

Among the white shapes, forms reminiscent of fish, birds, seaweeds, and various aquatic creatures can be discerned. However, none of these evolve into a detailed depiction of nature. The curvilinear edges, cut directly with scissors, make the creatures appear to be swimming in the water or moving with the current.

The disappearance of the boundary between sea and sky is one of the striking features of the composition. Forms evoking birds and aquatic creatures move side by side on the same surface. Thus, traditional spatial distinctions like up and down, air and water become blurred; the entire surface transforms into a single vast living space.

The visual world of the work is connected to impressions from a journey to the South Pacific, particularly Tahiti. Tropical seas, lagoons, corals, seaweeds, and birds reappear years later, based not on direct observation but on forms retained in memory. Therefore, the composition conveys visual impressions left by Polynesian nature rather than a realistic view of a specific geography.

The cut paper method is central to the formal character of the work. Thanks to pieces of paper colored with gouache and cut, line and color unite in a single gesture. The sharp and curvilinear contours of the white figures transform into lines drawn with scissors, while the limited color palette enhances the monumental and decorative effect of the composition.

“Polynésie, la mer” abstracts marine life within a strong union of blue, green, and white, transforming the movement of nature into an extremely simple visual language. Organic forms floating on a geometric background bring together the underwater world and the sky on the same surface, giving the composition a movement that is both free and balanced.

Details

Artist: Henri Matisse (1869–1954)

Title: Polynésie, la mer (Polynesia, the Sea)

Date: 1946

Technique: Gouache on cut and pasted paper;
