In this oil painting created in Paris in 1913, a vase of flowers and two bowls filled with fruit are placed on a dark surface. The addition of a small tortoise to the composition adds movement and narrative to the traditional still life arrangement.

The tortoise, heading towards a red apple, is depicted climbing the edge of the fruit bowl. This small detail transforms the everyday objects of the painting into part of an event. As the viewer's attention wanders between the flowers and fruits, it finds a new focal point in the movement of the tortoise. Thus, the still life can be read as a scene that sparks curiosity beyond the mere arrangement of objects.

Kolig unites the objects and the background within a common pictorial structure using hatching-like brushstrokes. This approach gives the composition expressive power and visual movement. The relationship between the forms is evaluated as much through the surface arrangement that constitutes the whole of the painting as it is through the recognizability of individual objects.

The work is part of the still life series the artist prepared between 1911 and 1913. These works reflect Kolig’s interest in Paul Cézanne’s approach to painting. In "Still Life with Tortoise," everyday objects serve as a starting point to explore the coming together of forms and their relationships on the painting surface.

The intriguing aspect of the composition is that it brings together arranged objects and a living creature following its own path in the same scene. The tortoise's small movement invites the viewer to look at the painting again. The work, which might be seen as a mere arrangement of fruit and flowers at first glance, gains a more personal and narrative appearance once this detail is noticed.

The Fine Art print of Anton Kolig’s "Still Life with Tortoise" can be considered by those interested in modern still life paintings and artworks featuring animal figures. It can create a focal point that draws attention with its distinct details in a dining area, kitchen, or living space. When used alongside other prints featuring fruit, flower, and table arrangements, it can accompany a gallery wall themed around daily life.

Details

Artist: Anton Kolig (1886–1950)

Work Title: Still Life with Tortoise

Date: 1913

Medium: Oil on canvas

Dimensions: 92.5 × 73.6 cm

Signature: Location, date, and monogram “Paris 1913 OK” on the top left

Location: Leopold Museum, Vienna

🏛️ Source &
