Jacob Jordaens - The Bean King's Feast

The Feast of the Bean King (Das Fest des Bohnenkönigs)

Jacob Jordaens (1593–1678) , one of the most influential figures in 17th-century Flemish Baroque painting, depicted scenes of folk life with rich color, strong figurative arrangement, and a vibrant sense of movement. A contemporary of Rubens, Jordaens brought both humor and human warmth to Flemish painting.

The painting, "The Feast of the Bean King," is based on a Flemish folk tradition. During this feast, held annually in January on the Feast of the Epiphany (Three Kings Day), the person who found a cake with a bean hidden inside was declared the "king" of the day. Jordaens depicted this scene with a dynamic composition of intertwined figures. The crowd, joyfully singing, toasting, and eating, creates a vibrant atmosphere with warm accents of light.

The work contains as much humor as it does social observation. The artist symbolizes man's search for fleeting happiness through festive revelry in a painting of a community lost in intoxication and joy. The color palette, dominated by red, gold, and brown, conveys both exuberance and earthly warmth. This painting most strikingly reveals Jordaens's sensitivity to folk life.
