André Derain - Woman in a Chemise
Woman in a Chemise
André Derain (1880–1954) was one of the founders of Fauvism , one of the most radical color revolutions in modern art. In this movement, which he developed with Matisse between 1905 and 1907, Derain used color as a direct means of emotional expression, rejecting natural tones and creating a new visual language with intense, pure, and striking colors. "Woman in a Chemise" is one of the most characteristic portraits of Derain's Fauvist period—the contrast between the model's austere pose and the striking energy of the colors makes the work profoundly modern and impressive.
This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington .
In the composition, a young woman wearing a thin-strapped white shirt gazes at the viewer with a serene posture. Derain renders the figure not with photographic realism, but with broad, flat brushstrokes and strong fields of color. Deep blue shadows, warm reds, and accentuated oranges imbue the figure's body with a rhythmic dynamism. The facial modeling is based on color relationships rather than the depth of traditional portraiture. The contrast between the warm surfaces of the background and the white of the shirt highlights the figure while simultaneously transforming the entire painting into a harmony of color. This style crystallizes Fauvism's fundamental idea of "the direct transmission of emotion through color."
“Woman in a Chemise” is a moment of modernity that is both simple and powerful, both figurative and almost abstract.

Good to Know
If you want to purchase your print with a frame, make sure the print size you choose is compatible with the frame .
All frames in our collection are offered with a mat, but you can also choose to use them without a mat.
The table below will help you choose the right frame size for your print size.
The mockup images on the product page are for the purpose of showing the frame in person. Therefore, some mockups may appear cropped or ill-fitting.
The product you order is prepared in the frame you see in the main image of the work , preserving its original proportions.
If the artwork size and frame size are not exactly the same (for example, a 19×28 cm print in a 20×30 cm frame), the print will be placed centered in the frame and thin white spaces may naturally occur around the edges.
This practice is done intentionally to ensure that no detail of the work is lost and the original proportions are preserved.
