The Musicians

“The Musicians” is an early postcard design that transforms music-making figures into a fairy-tale, naive, and decorative visual world, rather than depicting them within a realistic scene. While human figures, musical instruments, and surrounding elements are defined by a few distinct lines and fields of color, traditional perspective and anatomical accuracy are consciously sidelined.

At the center of the composition are male figures playing music. The elongated proportions of their bodies, their exaggerated movements, and their simplified faces lend the scene a theatrical character. The figures are far removed from the idealized human depictions of academic painting; instead, one sees a free formal language that evokes folk art and the direct, uninhibited expression of children’s drawings.

Musical instruments are not merely details that explain what the figures are doing. Their diagonal and vertical lines, combined with the movements of the human bodies, create the overall rhythm of the postcard. Thus, the concept of music is transformed into a visual rhythm; sound is replaced by repeated lines, forms, and color contrasts.

The horse figure seen in the composition is also an important part of this fairy-tale world. There is no clear visual hierarchy established between humans and animals. The stylized body of the animal is treated within the same graphic language as the musicians' unusual proportions, contributing to the entire scene's departure from everyday reality.

The color lithography technique supports the design's strong graphic character. Rather than being used to create volume and natural light, colors are applied in broad, distinct surfaces. The combination of contours and color fields ensures that the figures are easily distinguishable even in the small postcard format.

Folk art, the world of fairy tales, grotesque figures, and naive narration are key sources in these early graphic works. The conscious simplification of the figures is a way of distancing the work from the period's academic artistic approach. Beneath the image's seemingly childish language lies a highly controlled design sensibility based on the relationship between line and surface.

The work is a product of the collaboration established with the Wiener Werkstätte during education at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts. In the postcard designs that began with the encouragement of Carl Otto Czeschka, fairy-tale characters, grotesque animals, and figures evoking folk culture were used repeatedly. Of the total of 22 postcard designs prepared, 16 were put into production.

These artist postcards were one of the accessible examples of the Wiener Werkstätte’s idea of merging art with daily life. The understanding of art, which was not limited to painting, furniture, or architecture, extended to small, reproducible objects used in daily life, such as postcards. Thus, modern design entered circulation not only through galleries but also through printed objects that people could send to one another.

“The Musicians” turns music-making figures and animals into a small graphic world built on line, color, and movement, distancing them from a realistic narrative. Its naive appearance, influences from folk art, and the rhythmic arrangement of the figures place the work at a remarkable intersection between the experimental graphic production of the Wiener Werkstätte and early Expressionist narrative.
