Jean Baptiste Vanmour - Turkish Woman in Front of Embroidery Frame

Turkish Woman at Her Embroidery Frame

Jean Baptiste Vanmour (1671–1737) , one of the most important painters documenting Ottoman life in the early 18th century, was a pioneer of the Orientalist Realism tradition. Born in Flanders, the artist lived in Istanbul for many years and depicted scenes from the Ottoman court and daily life with remarkable powers of observation. His works played a significant role in fostering interest in Eastern culture in Europe.

"Turkish Woman at Her Embroidery Frame" is one of Vanmour's most elegant and respectful depictions of Ottoman women's life. In the work, a young Turkish woman works diligently at an embroidery loom. Her posture, the silk and gold embroidery on her dress, are combined with the simple yet rich details of the setting.

Vanmour here conveys not exotic curiosity, but quiet elegance and cultural sophistication . The woman's attire—embroidered robe, belt, and headscarf—reflects the typical appearance of upper-class Ottoman women of the period. The carpets, cushions, and wall hangings in the background define both the interior's aesthetic and the woman's living environment.

The light focuses on the woman's face and her handiwork, indicative of Vanmour's Realist approach. The color palette is dominated by warm reds, golds, blues, and creams. "Turkish Woman at Her Embroidery Frame" is both a cultural document and a visual expression of respect for women's labor.

Good to Know

If you want to purchase your print with a frame, make sure the print size you choose is compatible with the frame .

All frames in our collection are offered with a mat, but you can also choose to use them without a mat.

The table below will help you choose the right frame size for your print size.

The mockup images on the product page are for the purpose of showing the frame in person. Therefore, some mockups may appear cropped or ill-fitting.

The product you order is prepared in the frame you see in the main image of the work , preserving its original proportions.

If the artwork size and frame size are not exactly the same (for example, a 19×28 cm print in a 20×30 cm frame), the print will be placed centered in the frame and thin white spaces may naturally occur around the edges.

This practice is done intentionally to ensure that no detail of the work is lost and the original proportions are preserved.
