Joan Miró - Black and Red

Untitled from Black and Red Series (Série noire et rouge)

"Untitled from Black and Red Series" is an intense and dynamic engraving created by the encounter of red and black lines on a light-colored paper surface. At first glance, the composition appears to consist of abstract marks, but upon closer inspection, it reveals a tense relationship between forms that evoke human figures and an unusual creature.

In the composition, black and red function not only as colors but also as two independent linear layers. The curving, intersecting, and abruptly changing lines sometimes overlap and sometimes diverge. These encounters create a constantly shifting sense of movement and irregularity on the surface.

The figures are largely detached from anatomical reality. Elongated limbs, large heads, circular marks reminiscent of eyes, and organic lines blur the boundary between the human body and imaginary creatures. In different prints of the series, similar figures are rearranged to create variations of the same fundamental scene with different intensities.

The historical context behind the series is important for understanding the tense character of the composition. The works were developed during the Spanish Civil War. While the three figures are interpreted by some as mother, child, and father, the long-nosed, monster-like head opposite them has been associated with the oppressive and fearful atmosphere of the period. However, the meaning of these figures is not reducible to a definitive narrative.

The printing technique is also central to the visual structure of the series. Two separate copper plates were printed with red and black ink, and eight different compositions were created by overlapping the plates in various positions and combinations. The rearrangement of the same visual elements in each print gives the series the quality of a narrative in motion.

The large open areas of the paper create significant visual space around the dense lines. The weight of black and the strong emphasis of red become more pronounced thanks to this space. The limited use of color directs the viewer's attention directly to the movement of the line, the deformation of the figures, and the tension within the composition.

"Untitled from Black and Red Series" combines figurative allusions with abstract and automatic-looking lines, transforming the uneasy atmosphere of the period into a powerful graphic language. The complex structure created by the overlapping of red and black plates further emphasizes the conflicting and intertwined movements of the figures.
