Factory in Berlin

Fabrik in Berlin / Factory in Berlin

"Factory in Berlin" is an Expressionist cityscape that addresses the industrial architecture of the modern city through powerful areas of color and increasingly abstract forms. Rather than creating a detailed depiction of the city, factory buildings, chimneys, and surrounding architectural masses are transformed into interlocking color surfaces.

The geometric character of the factory structures is prominent in the composition. Vertical chimneys, horizontal rooflines, and building blocks of varying heights segment the surface of the painting. This architectural order maintains the functional structure of the industrial environment while simultaneously creating a powerful geometric rhythm.

Traditional concepts of perspective and volume are notably pushed into the background. Instead of being rendered as three-dimensional masses through light and shadow, the buildings are treated as more planar color fields. The reduction of modeling and shadows detaches the architecture from its physical weight, highlighting the abstract structure of the composition.

Color is the primary expressive tool of the work. Rather than replicating the actual colors of the industrial structures, it is used to distinguish different surfaces and to establish the internal rhythm of the painting. The dense application of oil paint and visible brushstrokes create a strong contrast with the rigid geometry of the factories.

The chimneys are particularly noteworthy. As symbols of industrialization and the modern city, these vertical structures are not merely functional architectural components within the composition; they transform into graphic elements that define the overall arrangement of the painting. The contrast in scale they create with the shorter surrounding buildings makes the dominant presence of the factory within the city tangible.

The work is one of six paintings that emerged during a study trip to Berlin. During this period, urban life and industrial architecture became areas where a new pictorial language could be explored. A mundane and functional structure like a factory replaces the natural environment of traditional landscape painting, demonstrating that the modern city itself can be a valid subject for art.

A significant shift in pictorial narrative is visible during the Berlin period. While the intense and emotional use of paint from earlier works does not completely disappear, forms become increasingly simplified. Moving away from the detailed depiction of the object observed, greater importance is placed on the relationship between color, surface, and composition.

For this reason, "Factory in Berlin" is positioned on the border between figurative representation and abstraction. While the factory and chimneys remain clearly recognizable, the independent structure of the painting surface becomes increasingly significant. Architecture is no longer just the subject being represented, but the starting point for an exploration of color and form.

Choosing an industrial environment as a subject also links the work to the modern urban experience of the early 20th century. While factories, machines, and rapidly changing cities became symbols of modernization in the visual culture of the era, here, industry becomes a part of a formal investigation rather than a dramatic narrative.

"Factory in Berlin" reinterprets the appearance of industrial Berlin as a powerful color composition by transforming chimneys and factory blocks into stark geometric surfaces. The progressive flattening of objects and the transformation of color into an independent vehicle of expression make this work one of the notable examples in Austrian Expressionism that approaches abstraction.
