Nicolaas Verkolje - The Abduction of Europa
The Rape of Europa (De roof van Europa)
Nicolaas Verkolje (1673–1746), considered a leading figure in late 19th- and early 20th-century Dutch painting, was an artist who handled historical and mythological subjects with a classical elegance. He was influenced by the Dutch royal family and gravitated toward portraits and figures of scholars, as well as grand mythological narratives.
" The Rape of Europa (De roof van Europa) " is a work executed around 1735-1740 that demonstrates Verkolje's interest in mythology. The painting depicts a mythological scene from the ancient writer Ovid's Metamorphoses : the god Zeus, disguised as a white bull, abducts the young princess Europa; the scene also features a god of love preparing an arrow to the side.
Verkolje's composition combines both the drama of mythological narrative and classical taste by employing multiple figures, rich landscapes, and architectural backdrops. The work's color palette is balanced with warm browns, bright gold accents, and pastel shadows. The bull's powerful form, Europa's graceful posture, and the movement of the surrounding figures enliven the scene. This painting demonstrates Verkolje's engagement not only with depicting mythological narratives but also with academic tradition.
