Claude Monet - Sunset at Pourville, High Tide

Coucher de soleil à Pourville, pleine mer (Sunset at Pourville, High Tide)

“Coucher de soleil à Pourville, pleine mer” (Sunset at Pourville, High Tide) is an atmospheric seascape depicting Pourville on the Normandy coast in the last light of day. The sea, sky, and coastline merge in the changing colors of the sunset, emphasizing the effect of light at a specific moment rather than the physical details of the landscape.

The sea and sky comprise a large portion of the composition. Although the horizon line separates the two areas, the repetition of similar colors on the surfaces of both the water and the sky softens this boundary. The sea reaching the shore due to the high tide further accentuates the open and expansive character of the landscape.

As the warm yellow, orange, and pink hues of the sunset spread across the sky, these colors reappear as fragmented reflections on the water's surface. The warm colors, encountering blues, purples, and grays, powerfully convey the brief interval as daylight gradually fades.

The sea surface is enlivened with short, horizontal brushstrokes. The application of different colors side by side prevents the water from having a single, fixed tone; waves, reflections, and changing light intertwine on the same surface. Thus, the movement of the sea is conveyed through color and brush rhythm rather than detailed drawing.

The dark landmasses on the shore create a strong element of balance against the bright sky and sea. These denser and darker areas define the spatial structure of the landscape while also enhancing the luminosity of the light-colored sky. Details of the shore are intentionally relegated to the background, emphasizing the overall atmospheric effect.

Sunset is an ideal subject for observing transient light conditions, one of the fundamental investigations of Impressionist painting. The rapid change of colors during this brief part of the day causes the same landscape to take on an entirely different appearance within minutes. Here, too, the true subject of the painting is not merely the coast of Pourville, but the fleeting moment when light transforms the sea and sky.

“Coucher de soleil à Pourville, pleine mer” interprets the Pourville coast through color and atmosphere, combining the warm light of sunset with the dynamic surface of the sea at high tide. The fragmented repetition of warm tones from the sky onto the water unifies different parts of the landscape within a single light experience.
