André Derain - Madame Matisse in a Kimono

Madame Matisse in a Kimono

“Madame Matisse in a Kimono” is one of the most striking portrait studies from the birth of Fauvism, handling the female figure with intense colors independent of natural reality. Rather than the figure's identity, the focus is on the relationship established between the colors; the face, kimono, and surrounding space are transformed into broad, powerful fields of color, marking a significant departure from traditional portraiture.

The woman portrayed is Amélie Matisse. The figure is depicted wearing a kimono characteristic of Japanese culture. The kimono’s dense patterns and bright colors create a strong contrast with the simpler forms of the face. The garment is not merely a costume defining the figure, but becomes an independent surface of color and pattern covering most of the composition.

Traditional skin tones are not used in the treatment of the face. Yellows, pinks, greens, and blues meet, expressing light and shadow without realistic tonal transitions. Defining facial features with a few bold brushstrokes pushes the quest for physical likeness into the background, while bringing the figure’s direct and powerful expression to the fore.

The decorative structure of the kimono is associated with Japonisme, which had a significant impact on European art from the late 19th century onwards. The flat color areas, distinct contours, unconventional compositions, and decorative surface approach found in Japanese prints offered modern artists a visual language alternative to traditional Western perspective. Here, the kimono is used both as the subject and as an element that reinforces the planar character of the composition.

Instead of placing the figure within a realistic interior, the background is treated as a more ambiguous surface where the colors continue. As the spatial separation between the figure and its surroundings weakens, the kimono patterns and background colors converge. This flattening makes the physical surface of the painting particularly visible and directs the viewer's attention to color relationships rather than perspective.

Free and visible brushstrokes also play an important role in the energy of the composition. The paint surface is not smoothed out; touches moving in different directions are felt throughout the face, hair, fabric, and background. This direct application creates an expressive form that appears more spontaneous compared to the controlled and detailed finish of academic painting.

The period in which the work emerged coincides with Fauvist experiments in Collioure, where the new possibilities of color were intensively explored. The departure from natural colors, the simplification of forms, and the powerful juxtaposition of complementary colors constitute the fundamental characteristics of the approach that would soon be defined as Fauvism.

“Madame Matisse in a Kimono” brings together portraiture, fashion, and the influences of Japonisme within an intense color experience. The decorative patterns of the kimono, the construction of the face with unconventional colors, and the increasingly flattened space transform the figure from a realistic portrait into a modern composition defined by color and form.
