Egon Schiele - Landscape with Ravens

Landscape with Ravens / Rabenlandschaft

“Landscape with Ravens” transforms nature into a powerful Expressionist landscape where life, death, and transformation coexist, rather than presenting it as a peaceful, idealized image. The majority of the composition is occupied by earth rendered in countless shades of brown, while the sky is visible only in narrow, bright areas at the top of the painting. This unusual arrangement directs the viewer's gaze toward the earth itself rather than the sky.

The elevation, positioned near the center of the painting, fills almost the entire field of vision. The surface of the earth is not uniform; shades ranging from yellow to reddish-brown, and dark brown to near-black are juxtaposed to create a dense and dynamic texture. Dedicating such a large portion of the landscape to the earth makes nature feel not merely like a surrounding environment, but like an organism that lives, changes, and ultimately reabsorbs everything.

The flock of ravens, passing through the narrow sky in the upper section, is the most dynamic element of the composition. Small black silhouettes are easily distinguished against the light-colored sky, creating a strong movement against the painting's heavy, static mass of earth. The cultural associations of ravens with death and transience combine with the overall atmosphere of the landscape to reinforce the existential character of the work.

A weathered fence stretches along the boundary between the earth and the sky. This human-made structure is no longer orderly or sturdy; it seems to be integrating with, or even dissolving into, the surrounding nature. The nearby crooked hut similarly blends into the earth tones. The boundary between the man-made and the natural gradually fades away.

The bare autumn tree is another essential part of this relationship. Its leafless branches merge with the fragile geometry of the hut and the fence. By bringing together the tree’s life cycle and the gradual erosion of man-made structures in the same composition, nature and culture, life and death become inseparable concepts.

The reduction of the color palette largely to earth tones supports this concept. Within the brown, red, yellow, and near-black colors, the hut and the tree are almost camouflaged. Because objects are not separated from their surroundings by sharp boundaries, the entire landscape is perceived as a single organic structure.

The meaning attributed to nature during this period was not based solely on observation. Earth was seen as part of everything that is born, lives, dissolves, and reforms. Texts written during the time the work was produced also emphasize the idea that the world exists within a cycle of breathing, feeling, producing, decomposing, and beginning anew. The earth, the dried tree, the weathered structures, and the birds in the sky in the painting visually bring together the different stages of this cycle.

The work emerged during the period when Schiele moved to Neulengbach, marking the beginning of an intense phase of production. Although the surrounding rural landscape provides a real starting point, the image transcends topographical accuracy. The hill, hut, tree, fence, and ravens become parts of a shared idea rather than documentation of a specific location.

“Landscape with Ravens” elevates the earth from being a background to becoming the true subject of the painting. The autumn tree, the collapsing fence, the hut blending into the earth, and the ravens moving across the sky form a dense composition suggesting that the emergence and disappearance of life are not separate, but parts of the same natural cycle.
