Oskar Laske - Tunis

Tunis

“Tunis” is a colorful graphic work that captures North African urban life through a lively market scene. The composition, where architecture, human figures, and animals are intertwined, focuses on conveying the bustle of daily city life as a whole rather than centering on a specific structure or person.

The figures scattered in various directions throughout the composition define the crowded nature of the marketplace. Camels placed among the people become one of the most striking elements of the scene, while also incorporating the city's daily trade and transport culture into the visual narrative.

The figures are not treated as detailed portraits. Defined by small spots of color and distinct contours, the groups of people contribute more to the sense of movement created by the crowd than to individual identities. Thanks to this approach, the eye does not fixate on a single point but wanders continuously throughout the composition.

Urban architecture is likewise not intended as a topographical record. Buildings, walls, and streets are arranged more according to the rhythm of the composition than the rigid rules of perspective. Overlapping architectural surfaces and dense groups of figures emphasize the city's intense and layered structure.

Color is one of the primary expressive tools of the work. As warm earth tones are set alongside more vibrant colors, the possibilities of the color lithography technique allow for the differentiation of various surfaces. Colors are used not only to define objects but also to amplify the movement and visual variety of the market.

The combination of linear narrative and color fields gives the scene both a painterly and a strong graphic character. While architectural details, human figures, and animals are defined with rapid yet controlled lines, the density on the surface increases the energy of the composition.

The work approaches the simplified and decorative narrative of early modern graphic art rather than traditional academic perspective. The observation-based cityscape is reimagined through color, line, and movement, distanced from literal realism.

The artistic approach associated with the Hagenbund is also significant here. This circle, which was influential in the development of modern art in Vienna, created a freer space where different modernist tendencies could converge. Here, too, the observation of travel transforms into a vibrant and graphic visual language that departs from the traditional city view.

“Tunis” treats the market's bustle, the camels, and the urban texture as a dynamic whole rather than breaking them down into small details. The distinct surfaces and vibrant linear structure of the color lithography bring the intensity of North African urban life together with the characteristic language of early modern Viennese graphic art.
