Henri Matisse - The Sheaf

La Gerbe (The Sheaf)

“La Gerbe” (The Sheaf) is a monumental composition made of multicolored organic forms rising on a white background. Blue, green, red, orange, yellow, and black forms fan out from the center, evoking a large bouquet of flowers, leaves, or plants. Instead of directly depicting a figurative image, it reduces forms taken from nature to their most basic relationships of color and line.

Long, curvilinear forms concentrated in the center of the composition move in different directions, upwards and sideways. While some resemble leaves, others flowers or aquatic plants, no form fully transforms into a realistic plant. This ambiguity allows the work to acquire an abstract visual language while maintaining its connection to nature.

Colors are not used to create any volume or shadow. Each form remains a flat and saturated color field in itself. The use of strong tones such as cobalt blue, bright green, orange, and red alongside black creates an extremely distinct contrast on the white background.

The white space is also an active part of the composition. The gaps between the colored forms allow them to be separated from each other, while helping the entire arrangement appear lighter and more dynamic. This extensive use of negative space is one of the main reasons why the composition does not feel heavy despite the dense clustering of colors.

At the core of the work is a design prepared using the cut-paper technique. This method, based on arranging gouache-colored papers cut with scissors, allows line and color to merge in a single movement. Unlike forms traditionally drawn first and then colored, here the form emerges directly from cutting the colored surface.

The opening of organic forms in different directions gives the composition a sense of growth and proliferation. While the allusions to leaves and flowers create a strong connection with nature, the simplification of the forms positions it on the border between decorative art and modern abstraction. The transfer of the design to a ceramic surface allows the colorful forms to directly relate to the architectural space.

“La Gerbe” transforms botanical forms taken from nature into simple color fields, making the relationship between line, color, and space the main subject of the composition. The colorful forms fanning out from the center evoke the vitality of a sheaf, while strong color contrasts give the work a joyful, energetic, and highly modern character.
