Katsushika Hokusai - Sôma Ceramics

Ceramics from Sôma / Sômayaki

Katsushika Hokusai’s 1822 “Sôma Ceramics” is a still life study exploring Japanese tea culture through everyday objects. A teapot, a covered porcelain vessel, and a cup featuring a running horse form the core elements of the composition. These objects bring together the rituals of preparing tea and the subtleties of ceramic art in a single image.

The title refers to Sôma, a settlement in Japan’s Mutsu region renowned for its ceramics. By placing everyday objects at the center of the image, Hokusai draws the viewer’s attention to small details. The shapes of the vessels and their decorations transform seemingly ordinary elements of daily life into visual details worthy of close inspection.

The horse motif on the cup adds a sense of movement to the stillness of the still life. This small figure prompts us to consider how a decorative element on the surface of an object can influence the character of the entire composition. The iron rods used to stir the coals while heating the tea water further reinforce the scene’s connection to everyday life.

The work belongs to the surimono tradition, a distinctive Japanese printing style that combines image and poetry. The work includes a poem by Shûfûen Hananushi. The addition of text invites the viewer to follow both the forms of the objects and the visual arrangement created by the words.

The embossed print accompanying the color woodblock print, along with metallic pigments and burnishing, creates the original work’s rich material character. This technical variety is particularly meaningful in a work depicting ceramics: the treatment of the print surface reflects the importance given to craftsmanship as much as the subject itself.

The “Sôma Ceramics” fine art print is a decorative option for those interested in Japanese art and tea culture. It can be displayed in a dining room, kitchen, study, or tea corner. When paired with wooden furniture, ceramic objects, and simple wall arrangements, it brings a focus of art inspired by everyday life to the space.
