Egon Schiele - Dead City III

Dead City III (City on the Blue River III) / Tote Stadt III (Stadt am blauen Fluss III)

“Dead City III” is a striking cityscape that depicts densely packed houses, dark roofs, and the blue-black river surrounding them from an unusually high vantage point. Instead of the bustling streets and human activity found in traditional cityscapes, one encounters a settlement that appears almost entirely abandoned. This absence of people elevates the architecture from being merely a landscape element to the psychological center of the composition.

The place depicted in the painting is Český Krumlov, known in German as Krumau at the time, located in present-day Czechia. The city, which has preserved its medieval character, served as one of the primary visual sources for these cityscapes with its winding Vltava River and tightly clustered houses. Because the image was created from the vantage point of the castle plateau above, the roofs of the houses are more visible than their facades.

The buildings are perceived not as independent structures, but as a single, dense architectural mass. The dark brown and earthy tones of the roofs seem to spread over the light-colored walls. Showing the houses in such a compressed manner transforms the city's actual topography, creating a closed and introverted visual world.

The Vltava River flowing past the settlement is rendered as a color field approaching dark blue, almost black, rather than the customary bright and reflective water surface. The stark contrast between the river and the earthy tones of the houses separates the architectural mass from its surroundings and accentuates the painting’s somber atmosphere.

The color palette is notably limited. While shades of brown, black, off-white, gray, and dark blue dominate the composition, more vibrant colors appear only in small areas. Thanks to this controlled palette, the common atmosphere of the entire settlement stands out more than the details of individual houses. Despite the small size of the painting, the dense masses of color lend the image a powerful weight.

Although the city appears completely abandoned, small details carry traces of human life. Specifically, the laundry hanging on the clothesline serves as a reminder that life once existed or still continues in this environment where people are not physically visible. The depiction of traces left behind, rather than the people themselves, makes the sense of emptiness even more pronounced rather than diminishing it.

Although the composition is based on an actual city view, topographical accuracy is not the sole objective. The perspective is compressed, the proportions of the buildings are altered, and the architectural forms are reshaped according to the overall arrangement of the painting. Thus, a real city is transformed into an Expressionist landscape that carries feelings of loneliness and isolation beyond its physical appearance.

The “Dead City” motif first emerged following the artist's intense relationship with Krumau and was revisited in various versions. This small wooden panel is one of the most atmospherically dense examples of the series. In the artist’s own words, the work was considered one of those with the “most serious colors” among the cityscapes he produced.

“Dead City III” transforms an actual city view into a psychological image through its huddled houses, dark roofs, and blue-black river. The absence of people, empty windows, and a few traces of daily life turn the city from a physical place into a visual manifestation of feelings of loneliness, confinement, and isolation.
