Egon Schiele - Death and Man (Self-Seers II)

Self-Seers II (Death and Man) / Selbstseher II (Tod und Mann)

“Self-Seers II (Death and Man)” is one of the most psychologically intense self-portraits in Austrian Expressionism, exploring the encounter with one’s own self through two superimposed figures. The pale second body emerging behind the dark-clothed figure in the foreground transcends being a mere shadow, transforming into an enigmatic image that can be read as another facet of the self, a twin, or the presence of death.

The figure in the foreground appears to have closed their eyes, having withdrawn their focus entirely from the outside world. The sharp lines, prominent cheekbones, and red-brown color transitions on the face emphasize internal tension rather than physical resemblance. Thus, instead of establishing direct eye contact with the viewer, the portrait depicts a moment of intense self-observation where the individual turns inward.

The pale twin rising just behind the figure constitutes the psychological center of the composition. This second face is not entirely detached from the body in the foreground; it appears to emerge from within it or cling to it. The Leopold Museum associates this ghostly figure with the fragmentation of the integrity of the self. Showing a single person as two separate beings transforms the portrait into a multilayered image about identity, the self, and death.

The open hand rising from the lower part of the painting creates an even more ambiguous element. It cannot be determined with certainty to which figure the hand belongs. The widely spread fingers are placed on the surface of the painting like a gesture independent of the body. The unusual emphasis on hands and fingers is a characteristic feature of the approach that turned body language into one of the primary tools of psychological expression in works of this period.

The color palette consists largely of tones of brown, black, pale gray, off-white, and red. Leaving the background ambiguous and almost abstract prevents the figures from being placed in a specific space. Thus, there are no environmental elements that could distract the viewer; the two faces, the body, and the hand take on the entire psychological weight.

The paint application is not smooth. The movement of the brush is clearly felt on the faces, clothing, and background. Especially the pale second figure creates a ghostly effect appearing on the surface rather than a physical body. The contrast between the more dense body in the foreground and the almost immaterial image behind it can be read as a pictorial representation of the relationship between life and death.

The fact that the work is known by two different names is also an important part of this multilayered structure. While the title “Self-Seers II” highlights the idea of a person looking at themselves and confronting their own self, “Death and Man” allows the same composition to be read as the encounter between man and death. Both titles are among those used for the work in its own time; therefore, it is not possible to reduce the second figure to a single meaning.

The double-figure motif is closely related to the idea of the splitting of identity and the individual observing themselves from the outside. In the Leopold Museum's interpretation, this work is considered a self-portrait in which the idea of a whole and unchanging “self” is questioned. For this reason, the pale presence in the background can be thought of as not only an allegory of death but also the alienated second self of the person in the foreground.

“Self-Seers II (Death and Man)” abandons the traditional self-portrait’s quest for physical resemblance and places the fragile relationship that an individual establishes with their own existence at the center of the painting. The closed eyes, the hand whose connection to the body is not finalized, and the ghostly twin appearing in the background remove the portrait from being a mere image of a single person and transform it into a powerful psychological composition on selfhood, death, alienation, and existence.
