Henri Matisse - Jazz Exhibition Poster

Exhibition Poster for Jazz, Galeria Europa, Rio de Janeiro

"Jazz Exhibition Poster" is an exhibition poster designed to announce the first exhibition of the artist's book titled Jazz in Brazil, drawing attention with its bold colors and simple graphic language. The composition brings together the boundaries between artwork, publication, and graphic design by translating the book's characteristic visual world into a public announcement format.

The visual language of the poster is based on the cut-and-painted paper (papiers découpés) technique developed for Jazz. The sharp, curved, and organic forms created by colored paper cut with scissors use color itself instead of traditional drawing. In this approach, form emerges from cutting the colored surface rather than being outlined by lines.

Color is the cornerstone of the composition. Bright reds, blues, yellows, and other intense tones are placed side-by-side in large, flat areas. The de-emphasis of tonal transitions and volume illusions allows the colors to interact directly with each other. This simplicity enhances the poster's powerful graphic impact, which is easily perceived even from a distance.

The title Jazz is important not only for establishing a direct visual relationship with music but also for understanding the entire structure of the work. Concepts associated with music such as improvisation, repetition, interruption, and rhythm find their reflection in the free movement of colored shapes across the page. Shapes that appear independent of one another form a cohesive whole, much like different sounds in a musical composition.

This visual language is one of the most important results of the cut-paper technique, which was developed at a time when physical conditions made it increasingly difficult to work on traditional canvas painting. The direct cutting of gouache-painted papers with scissors eliminated the distinction between drawing and color. This method subsequently became one of the most distinctive features of his later work.

Jazz is not just an album of visuals. It is a complete artist's book in which colorful compositions are accompanied by handwritten texts. Visuals containing various connotations such as circus, theater, travel, and the human figure create a rhythmic book experience together with the texts. The poster, meanwhile, concentrates the essence of this visual world onto a single surface.

The exhibition held at Galeria Europa in Rio de Janeiro is one of the early examples of the international circulation of the Jazz album. The fact that the poster was printed by Mourlot in Paris also demonstrates its relationship with the important tradition of art printing of the era. Thus, the work becomes not only an exhibition announcement but also a document of the relationship between modern art and printing, publishing, and graphic design.

"Jazz Exhibition Poster" brings together free forms born from cut papers, intense color contrasts, and graphic simplicity, transforming an ordinary exhibition announcement into an independent visual composition. This approach, where color is directly converted into form, sits at the intersection of modern graphic design and one of the most unique visual languages of 20th-century art.
