Joan Miró - The Red Sun

Le Soleil rouge (The Red Sun)

“Le Soleil rouge” (The Red Sun) is a powerful Surrealist composition that brings together large fields of color, bold black forms, and delicate linear markings on the same surface. The painting does not establish a recognizable landscape or a traditional narrative; instead, it creates a unique visual universe through forms that evoke the sun, figures, and celestial signs.

The most striking element of the composition is the bright red circle that gives the work its name. This form, which evokes the sun, stands out powerfully against the dark and heavier color fields surrounding it. The red circle acts not merely as a celestial body in isolation, but as a central sign that visually connects the different regions of the painting.

The large blue field creates the effect of a window opening into another space within the composition. The black lines and small touches of color situated upon this surface form a figure that can be read as a human face or a fantastic creature. However, the form is never entirely defined; it can transform into different associations depending on the viewer's perception.

In other sections of the painting, heavier and more organic forms have been created with thick black brushstrokes. Beside these are extremely fine lines, dots, and small spots of color. This contrast between the large, dense areas of paint and the delicate lines forms one of the fundamental visual tensions of the composition.

Strong colors such as red, blue, yellow, and black are used selectively rather than as a broad palette. The red sun and the bright blue surface, in particular, stand out almost like light sources against the darker background. This concentration of color creates a highly powerful visual effect with only a few elements.

The sun, stars, birds, women, and fantastic figures are motifs encountered repeatedly in this visual language. However, these images are transformed into simplified signs rather than being depicted directly. A circle may evoke the sun, a few lines a human body, and a small dot an eye or a star. This symbolic economy allows the painting to appear both extremely simple and open to various interpretations.

In works from this period, an interest in the night sky, music, and poetic associations becomes increasingly apparent. At the same time, the new American painting encountered in New York and the use of large-scale, free-form paint application are parts of the environment in which the painterly language developed. The resulting image is neither completely abstract nor entirely figurative; it establishes a poetic visual language that moves constantly between the two realms.

“Le Soleil rouge” reduces a cosmic scene to a few fundamental visual signs with its bright red sun, intense blue field, and black calligraphic forms. The contrast between large patches of color and fine lines gives the work both a powerful energy and an unexpected lightness.
