Leonardo da Vinci - The Last Supper
The Last Supper (Il Cenacolo / L'Ultima Cena)
Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519), one of the greatest masters of the Renaissance, uniquely combined art, science, and powers of observation. The Last Supper (Il Cenacolo / L'Ultima Cena) is one of the most famous and influential frescoes in art history. The work depicts the Last Supper, as described in the Bible, between Jesus and his apostles, and is considered one of the pinnacles of Renaissance art, particularly for its dramatic narrative and compositional arrangement.
The composition captures the moment when Jesus says, "One of you will betray me." Each of the apostles reacts emotionally to these words; reactions such as surprise, anxiety, anger, and curiosity are clearly visible in the gestures and facial expressions of the figures. Leonardo creates a strong rhythm by arranging the figures in groups of three. The figure of Jesus, located at the center of the composition, is positioned at the point where the architectural perspective lines converge, forming the visual focal point of the scene.
The linear perspective used in the work directs the viewer's gaze directly to the center. The arrangement of the figures, the table, and the architectural elements in the background enhance the dramatic effect of the scene. Leonardo, by reflecting human psychology and emotions with extreme subtlety, transformed the religious narrative into a profound human drama.
The Last Supper is not only a religious scene; it is also a powerful visual narrative about human relationships, betrayal, and fate. Its composition, figure arrangement, and use of perspective have inspired countless artists in Western art.
