Purity and Duality of Nature
Double Qing Sanyu
This work is an elegant example of traditional Chinese painting that combines observation of nature with calligraphic expression. By depicting both botanical forms and fish figures together, a harmonious relationship is established between different elements of nature. The use of ink and watercolor imbues the work with both vibrancy and poetic lightness.
The upper section of the work features branches, flowers, and bamboo leaves, while the lower section draws attention to three fish figures. The fish are rendered with fluid and minimal brushstrokes, emphasizing a sense of movement and vitality. There is a balanced use of space between the botanical forms above and the animal figures below.
The brushwork is free yet controlled. The transitions between thick and thin lines create a rhythmic effect in both the plants and the fish. The use of color is limited but effective; particularly the orange and black tones in the fish create a focal point in the composition.
Meaning of the Inscription
Generally:
👉 “In the cool moonlight (osmanthus/autumn) … Made in the autumn month of the year.”
General meaning:
The work carries a poetic expression about autumn, coolness, and nature's serene cycle. The fish and plants together symbolize the continuity and tranquility of nature.
Purity and Duality of Nature is not merely a depiction of nature; it is also a visual poem about seasonal transformation, tranquility, and the flow of life. The work invites the viewer to feel the silent rhythm of nature.
